358 judicial hangings from 1980 to September 2004
Media Statement by Lim Kit Siang (Parliament, Thursday): In the 24 years from 1980 till September 2004, a total of 358 judicial hangings had been carried out in Malaysia. This is the written answer by the Minister for Internal Security, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to a parliamentary question which I submitted in the budget meeting of the Dewan Rakyat last year and which has just been sent to me. However, the Prison Department has only detailed statistical breakdown for 234 judicial hangings which I had asked for, viz: out of 184 Malaysian citizens, 48 were Malays, 102 Chinese, 15 Indians and 19 others, comprising 129 under the Dangerous Drugs Act, 37 under the Penal Code, 11 under the Internal Security Act and 7 under the Firearms Act; while out of 50 foreign nationalities, there were seven from Thailand, eight from Hong Kong, 23 from the Philippines, four from Singapore, one from Pakistan, three from Nigeria, two from Indonesia, one from Australia and one from Britain, comprising 46 under the Dangerous Drugs Act, three under the Penal Code and one under the Internal Security Act. Out of the 234 “judicial hangings”, 229 were men and five women, with their age breakdown as follows:
