DAPSY to organise workshop on the University and University Colleges Act (UUCA)
Su Keong Siong (Petaling Jaya, Wednesday):
DAPSY will be organising a workshop on the UUCA
this Saturday, 11 February 2006 to discuss the repeal of the
controversial Act.
We note that
recently the
Malaysia Students Solidarity (SMM)
movement had sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister calling for the
abolishment of the Act, which was then followed by another memorandum
from the student representative councils of the 17 public universities
to the Deputy Prime Minister not to repeal the Act.
In view of these two
developments, this workshop is held with the purpose of examining the
provisions of the Act relating to university autonomy, academic
freedom and student rights and to collate the view of various
organisations and individuals on this important subject.
Among the prominent speakers
which we have invited to present their views at the workshop are Yusri
Mohamad (President, Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia), Datuk Paduka
Ibrahim Ali (former MP for Pasir Mas, Kelantan), Amer Hamzah (human
rights lawyer and activist), YB Nga Kor Ming (ADUN for Pantai Remis,
Perak and DAPSY Chief), YB Fong Po Kuan (MP for Batu Gajah and DAPSY
Vice-Chairwoman) and YB Loke Siew Fook (ADUN for Lobak, NS and DAPSY
National Secretary).
The workshop is themed “Abolish
the UUCA – Give New Life to Students” and will take place at the
Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Kuala Lumpur from 9.30am-4.00pm. For
more information, kindly contact Carmen Leong or Lau Weng San at
03-7957 8022 / 8551.
