Press Statement by Lee Ying Ha in Ampang on Wednesday, 17th December 2008:

DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) condemned the Rawang police by detaining 28 cycling under-age participant who participating the Jerit “ride for change” campaign with the reason of "save under-aged cyclists from being exploited.”

DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Deputy Chief Jenice Lee Ying Ha today condemned the Rawang police by detaining 28 cycling under-age participant who participating the Jerit “ride for change” campaign with the reason of "save under-aged cyclists from being exploited.” This was an irony detention which showed that the practices of the police force were immature and the detention consisted with political motive.

As a state assemblywoman for Teratai I urge the police to respect the rights of the people to ‘cycle’ and to campaign. Children have the rights to demonstrate their idea through actions. This is not the responsibility of the police personnel to ‘examine’ their knowledge of the campaign.

“Instead of protecting them by ‘sending them to detention without proper treatment’, the police should pioneer the way and escort the cycling team to make sure they arrive the destination safely”

I also urge the police to give full cooperation to the people who are exercising their rights to demonstrate their opinion.
