Liew attends 119th Assembly of the
Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva
DAP International Secretary and
Member of Parliament for Bukit Bendera Liew Chin Tong departs for Geneva
today to attend the 119th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)
in Geneva. Members of Parliament from 150 countries participate in the
Assembly.
Liew is the Honorary Secretary of IPU Malaysia Group. Other members of
the delegation are Tenggara MP Datuk Halimah Mohd Sidique, Serian MP
Datuk Richard Riot, Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar and Kuantan MP Fuziah
Salleh. The delegation is headed by Deputy Finance Minister and Tambun
MP Datuk Ahmad Husni MOhamad Hanadzlah.
Nuclear non-proliferation, climate change and freedom of expression are
the three key themes of the current Assembly.
Opposition MPs in the delegation will present minority report on the
on-going trial of Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as well as the recent ISA
arrest of MP for Seputeh Teresa Kok.
The IPU Assembly is held from 13th to 15th October. Liew will attend a
subsequent session on “Informing democracy: building capacity to meet
parliamentarians’ information and knowledge needs” on 16th October.
