Press Statement by Dr. Hiew King Cheu in Kota
Kinabalu on
Saturday, 13rd September 2008:
A Malaysian’s Malaysia
It is 45 years of Malaysia since 16th
September,1963. The cross section of the population until today has not
adopted the way and thinking that we should unite as one “ Malaysian
race”. The various races are still using their direct race-identity as
per their ancestors.
DAP Member of Parliament for Kota Kinabalu, Dr. Hiew King Cheu urges all
Malaysian to work towards a true Malaysian society that we are all
Malaysian. The shear reason is being that Malaysia is our country and
the citizens of Malaysia are Malaysian. If we still continue to call
ourselves as Chinese, Indian and Malay, there will be no chance to
achieve a national integration and unity. The various races are dividing
amount themselves and that is the “Mother of All Troubles”, and it is
destroying our country.
Dr.Hiew further stressed that the Chinese people in Malaysia should not
continue to be called or regard themselves as the Chinese or “orang cina”,
this is because the citizens of China are called Chinese and we are not.
We are born here and grew up in Malaysia, and that makes us a true
Malaysian. The same should apply to the other various groups and races.
The racial conflict and marginalization can be eliminated through this
simple exercise by using a united national race, the Malaysian race!
This course of action will definitely unite our people, to reduce
differences, and thereby achieved the goal of national integration,
respect and stability. The country can then progress smoothly without
hindrances, and all Malaysians are working together as an unbreakable
team.
It is up to you to decide what sore of future to be installed for
Malaysia, and it is within your power to make this a reality. This is
the duty and responsibility of all Malaysians irrespective of religions,
and political backgrounds. We shall stand as a united Malaysian Race.
