Media statement by Liew Chin Tong in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, 21st October 2011: The demise of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi yesterday marks the end of an era and a new beginning for the region Libya The demise of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi yesterday marks the end of an era and a new beginning for the region. It is perhaps the most significant moment of the Arab Spring, which saw the falls of dictators in the Arab world and Northern Africa. DAP views recent events in Libya with great concern. We support the fundamental unity, security and sovereignty of Libya as an independent nation. Libya's future should not be dictated by big powers but by the democratic decision of Libyans. The DAP is of the conviction that only free and fair elections of the utmost standard of transparency and legality can determine the legitimate Libyan government worthy of international recognition. Myanmar-Malaysia refugee swap The Democratic Action Party deplores the proposal for a detainee swap between Malaysia and Myanmar. This pact would entail the deportation of a thousand Myanmar refugees back to their home country where they face the threat and likelihood of political persecution. Additionally, we also concur with Suaram in the concern that by agreeing to this agreement with Myanmar, "the Malaysian government is giving greater recognition to the undemocratic and tyrannical regime in this region". Malaysia should not be a party to any treaty that stands in risk or violation of any human right. We should instead be pursuing initiatives that can serve as a towering moral example for the region as a whole. * Liew Chin Tong, DAP International Secretary & MP for Bukit Bendera
