Call for MCMC to conduct independent and indepth investigation of the Internet Censorship using Deep Packet Inspection and to restore confidence in MSC's Guarantee of “No Internet Censorship”
DAP is lodging an official complaint to MCMC today on the Internet blockade to DAP sites, videos hosted on youtube.com, DAP's facebook accounts, DAP MP's blogs and news portals.
On 2nd May 2013, MCMC released a statement reported in the mass media stating, "Preliminary investigations indicate no such restrictions by ISPs as alleged by certain quarters,". This is in response to an earlier report by Malaysiakini to MCMC.
With the full knowledge of the 2nd May statement by MCMC, DAP is submitting evidence of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) method which was reported by rizvanp on Low Yat forum which has been independently replicated and verified by me. If this evidence could be gathered using free open source tools, I am sure MCMC with its technical expertise, funding and regulatory muscle could do the same and more.
I have also found network equipment bearing TM branding with capabilities of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and filtering. The equipment is Arbor Networks Peakflow SP. This evidence is also submitted to MCMC. DAP has went a step further to point out where this network equipment could be located in terms of Internet route.
In investigating the DPI filtering equipment location, I have found 1032 suspicious network equipment using same IP address family as the the Arbor Network Peakflow SP with TM branding. Since the login page of this network equipment bears TM logo, undoubtedly MCMC should haul up TM and conduct IT forensic investigation on all 1032 equipments without delay. I am fully prepared to assist MCMC in its investigations.
In light of this new evidence, MCMC must re-examine its 2nd May statement. MCMC should be politically impartial and hold the standard of government regulatory body that it should be. It must put the interest of all Malaysians first.
The interest of all Malaysian Internet users is at risk with Deep Packet Inspection equipment checking every click on the Internet of unsuspecting Malaysians. DPI could be used to collect username and password, personal information, analyze Internet surfing behavior, and all online communications.
I call upon Malaysians to install “https everywhere” (https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere) a plugin for Firefox or Google Chrome web browser. This plugin will default to https which is encrypted as opposed to regular http. This will provide a layer of protection to Internet users from DPI spying.
DAP would like to repeat the call of MP for Gelang Patah. Lim Kit Siang to MCMC “to ascertain who and under what authority Deep Packet Inspection had been sanctioned.” and to restore the MSC Guarantee of “No Internet Censorship”.
