Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali must resign immediately

Attorney-General (AG) Mohamed Apandi Ali must resign immediately as it is clear that he will not be able to perform his duties properly having regard to the very real likelihood that many cases under his watch such as the 1MDB probe will be reopened under the new Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.

It is necessary for the new PH government to commence a massive overhaul of most government agencies and it cannot be denied that the AG’s Chambers ranks as the most important of them. Apandi cannot remain the AG having previously cleared former Prime Minister Najib Razak of the 1MDB scandal as he would be in a position of conflict in the event Najib is investigated for same now.

The murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu must also be reopened and Apandi cannot remain as AG as he was one of the judges in the Court of Appeal who acquitted the two officers who were eventually found guilty of the said murder. The world must know who ordered the murder of Altantuya and only a new AG would be in a position to reopen investigations thereto.

In the circumstances, I call on Apandi to resign forthwith and if he refuses to do so, for Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to advise the appointment of a new AG to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong pursuant to Article 145(1) of the Federal Constitution.

It is crucial for a new AG to be appointed immediately to facilitate the necessary reforms under the new PH government. Apandi must go as he has clearly overstayed his welcome.
