6 reasons for the shocking landslide victory of DAP, Warisan and Pakatan Harapan combination in Sandakan

DAP is shocked by the landslide victory of DAP candidate Vivian Wong by a majority of 11,521 votes, despite a steep 18% drop in the voter turnout from 72% in the 2018 general elections to 54%, larger than the 10,098 vote majority obtained by her father Stephen Wong in the 2018 general elections. DAP and Vivian Wong made history with the largest winning majority in Sandakan electoral history. Further DAP won for the first time in all polling districts in Sandakan, including the BN strongholds of postal votes, Pulau Berhala and Kampung Sim Sim.

This victory belonged to the people of Sandakan, and their confidence and support for the political combination of Warisan, DAP and Pakatan Harapan. There are 6 reasons for the shocking landslide victory of DAP, Warisan and Pakatan Harapan combination in Sandakan.

One, full confidence and support by Sandakan voters for the “Sabah Bossku”, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, who personally campaigned door to door for days and spoke in many DAP ceramahs, including 45 minutes in the ceramah finale under heavy rain without an umbrella. Many Sandakan voters, including Malay and Muslim voters, were moved by his passion to serve, develop and bring change to make a better, more prosperous and clean Sabah for all regardless of race and religion.

Two, full confidence and support for the leadership of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, as leaders of the only coalition capable and qualified to unite, govern and represent all Malaysians by geography and demography. As the Sandakan by-election result proves, the opposition can not match Warisan, DAP and Pakatan Harapan’s combination stressing moderation and uniting Malaysians representing all races, religions and locality. This rejection of the divisive and destructive racist politics, religious extremism and corruption of the opposition, is the best gift for the 1st year anniversary of Warisan and PH winning power at the state and Federal government.

Three, support for people-centric development instead of crony capitalism, to make Sandakan a dynamic economy again. The empty promises and poor implementation of the past must be replaced by action and real change that people can see, touch and feel. Membina Harapan, Dinamik Sandakan.

Four a rejection of corruption and kleptocratic government to be replaced by good and clean governance. The people are sick and tired of corruption and is a complete rejection of corrupt politicians who campaigned in Sandakan, like Kinabatangan MP and former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Five, support for the good work done by the late Stephen Wong, DAP’s idealism and steadfast principles, and a good candidate in Vivian Wong, who symbolised both the future, women and youth empowerment.

Six, DAP’s electoral machinery and mobilisation of leaders and members that were strongly supported by Warisan and PH, enabled a comprehensive campaign filled with energy, pace and voter outreach covering the entire constituency. DAP wishes to thank all Warisan, PH and DAP leaders and members who spent time to lend their support and make possible this historic landslide victory.

The time for victory celebrations will be short. The people of Sandakan expects us to work hard to bring change. DAP believes under the capable leadership of Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, we will deliver as promised.
