Special Message to Sdri Fong Po Kuan
from the DAP Secretary General, Kerk Kim Hock
read out at the Tea Party function held at Pusing branch on 10.6.2002 in conjunction with the ending of her parliamentary suspension

Po Kuan: DAP is proud of you!

First of all, please accept my apologies for not being able to attend this function held to "celebrate" the end of your parliamentary suspension as I am still undergoing follow up treatment for my rectal cancer.

Dec 11, 2001 was a sad day for parliamentary democracy and your suspension as a result of the passing of the unfair, unjust and undemocratic motion marked a black chapter in the nation's parliamentary history. This is one black mark that can never be erased.

Dec 11, 2001 was indeed a day where all of us, the DAP MPs, will find it hard to forget. For me, personally, it was a day I will never forget. It was a day when I felt so "emotionally drained " after taking part in the debate .It was also a day when I saw Sdri Chong Eng wiping off her tears in the Parliament chambers when the votes were taken on the motion to suspend you.

Such was the intensity of our anger at the injustice meted out against you - the youngest MP of the Parliament who has done the party proud through your discharge of your parliamentary responsibilities. Such was also the sense of solidarity we all felt for you.

If ever there was any consolation for us on the day when the Barisan Nasional MPs had failed to respond to my calls to vote with conscience and reject the vindictive, undemocratic and petty minded motion, it was because you rose to the occasion and delivered a speech which displayed your sense of courage and belief in justice. Dec 11, 2001 was a sad day for us, the DAP MPs, but it was also a day we felt proud of you.

I remember that while taking part in the parliamentary debate, I had said that if there existed a gap between law and justice, and in your case where there was a gap between the punishment and justice, then your suspension from the Parliament without pay fro six months would earn you support and admiration from the people.

Your road show round the country has proven what I said was right - that you have won the support and admiration of so many who believe you had done the right thing-for speaking up without fear for the people.

Nevertheless, I know that the six months of parliamentary suspension was not easy for you. However, I want to tell you that your sacrifices will not be in vain as no sacrifice can ever be made in vain. One main reason why the DAP has been able to continue to win the large support of the people for the past 36 years is due to the preparedness of our leaders and members to make the necessary sacrifices. Tonight, let me end by saying "We thank you for your sacrifices and DAP is proud of you!"
