We propose that the Malaysian Government exclude bumiputeraism and include
women in the national service
For many years, we have proposed national service in Malaysia. But, for some
reasons, the Government has not accepted it. Two days ago, the Cabinet decided
that the Defence Minister Dato' Seri Najib Tun Razak headed a National Service
Committee. Yesterday, Najib rehashed his statement on it.
Because of various factors including promotion and bumiputraism, therefore
Malays dominate the armed forces. Those who doubt the contributions of
Non-Malays should find out the reasons. Why do people in China, Taiwan and India
join armed and police forces?
The Statistics Department shows that 450,194 Malaysians are aged 18, the number
of both sexes being about equal. Both should serve. We must not ape Singapore
that, since 1967, only takes males.
National service is compulsory. A good system inculcates universal values,
making people more disciplined, patriotic and united. But, the Government must
ensure that there is no bumiputeraism, treating all youths equally, irrespective
of race, colour or creed. Only then can national service be effective.
