DAP Central Executive Committee, which met on 7th March 2016, congratulates DAPSY International Secretary and State Assemblyman for Pasir Pinji Howard Lee, who on 28 February 2016 was elected as the new President of International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY).
It is a recognition of the strategic importance of Asia as a region for a Malaysian to be elected to helm IUSY, which is the largest political youth organisation in the world, comprising 134 socialist, social democratic and labour youth organisations from over 80 countries all over the world.
Further Howard Lee had impressed members of IUSY with his promotion of social democratic values that can ensure both economic growth and prosperity for all. Penang has been promoted as such a success story where social democratic values need not be in conflict with the market economy, if public goods such as water and public housing are subject to government regulation.
Howard Lee is the first Southeast Asian to be elected to the position. This is the highest international position that DAPSY has achieved and we consider it a “gift” as DAP is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary on 18 March.
IUSY was founded 109 years ago, on 24 August 1907, with the aim to put into practice and defend the ideals of social democracy. We hope this new role will forge closer ties and international links to work together for a more innovative and progressive model of governance to overcome contemporary and future challenges.
