I refer to my recent statement wherein I had called for Tun Hanif Omar to be probed for sedition over his remarks that the DAP had wanted Malaysia to be split into two following the 1969 riots.
I wish to state that it was an error on my part to suggest the same as I too am of the view that the Sedition Act ought to be abolished in line with my party’s stand and what is promised in the Pakatan Harapan manifesto as the said Act is draconian and has outlived its purpose. The error is regretted.
I, however, maintain that Hanif’s statement may be criminal in nature which can pit one class of society against another and urge the police to investigate him under the Penal Code, particularly section 505 thereof.
It would be most unfortunate and worrying to allow such statements to be made without fear of any penal consequences as it can affect racial harmony in this delicate society of ours which must be defended.
It is hoped such legislation is introduced in the near future for the betterment of the country.
