{"id":35540,"date":"2012-05-04T05:07:20","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T21:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/?p=35540"},"modified":"2012-05-04T05:07:20","modified_gmt":"2012-05-03T21:07:20","slug":"bersih-3-0-police-violence-and-brutality-against-the-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/bersih-3-0-police-violence-and-brutality-against-the-people\/","title":{"rendered":"BERSIH 3.0: Police violence and brutality against the people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSC07880.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2070\" style=\"padding-right: 20px;\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSC07880-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>KUALA LUMPUR: The Bersih 3.0 \u201csit-in\u201d on April 28 was a greater public relations disaster for Datuk Seri Najib Razak than Bersih 2.0 \u2013 with the damage growing in magnitude and impact when all the horror stories of police\u2019s rampaging violence and brutality were told.<\/p>\n<p>DAP Parliamentary Leader Lim Kit Siang said the police\u2019s rampage of violence and brutality on that day were told where hundreds of thousands of Malaysians who came to Kuala Lumpur in peace were not allowed to disperse in peace.<\/p>\n<p>He said the excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate use of police force, whether firing of tear gas and chemically-laced water cannon or downright police violence and brutality, could not justify any breach of the Dataran Merdeka barricades on April 28.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo\u00a0reasonable\u00a0and\u00a0thinking\u00a0Malaysian\u00a0would\u00a0buy\u00a0Najib\u2019s\u00a0blame\u00a0yesterday\u00a0alleging\u00a0that\u00a0Bersih\u00a03.0\u00a0organisers\u00a0were\u00a0responsible\u00a0for\u00a0last\u00a0Saturday\u2019s violence, \u00a0in\u00a0particular\u00a0the\u00a0police\u00a0rampage of\u00a0violence\u00a0and\u00a0brutality\u00a0against\u00a0peaceful\u00a0protestors\u00a0and\u00a0media\u00a0representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA critic of the government\u2019s gross mishandling of Bersih 2.0 rally for free and fair elections in July last year \u00a0had urged the Najib administration to discard its \u201cCold War\u201d mindset and to modernize its concepts to address internal security and national issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this \u201cCold War\u201d mentality seemed to be very dominant in the gross mishandling of Bersih 3.0 \u201csit-in\u201d after 3 pm last Saturday,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Kit Siang reminded the Najib administration that the \u201cenemy\u201d was no longer armed communists battling a jungle war but a civilian movement consisting of politically awakened middle class that is wired to the global community.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the people were moved by fully legitimate issues based on the Malaysian Constitution such as free and fair elections; human rights of freedom of assembly and association; integrity, good, clean and incorruptible governance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSC07951.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2071\" style=\"padding-right: 20px;\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSC07951-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>With regard to the government\u2019s gross mishandling of the Bersih 2.0 rally, the Ipoh Timur MP said that Najib was able to pause,\u00a0 backtrack and salvage the situation before more damage was done \u2013 resulting in his Malaysia Day speech on September 16 on Political Transformation with a raft of promised reforms on democratic freedoms and human rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Najib \u00a0capable of piercing through the fog of self-serving propaganda by his advisers to realise \u00a0that Bersih 3.0 is an even greater disaster for him than Bersih 2.0, creating the \u201cugliest day in media history in Malaysia\u201d with reporters and photographers\u00a0 protesting on World Press Freedom Day yesterday wearing black with yellow ribbon and police professionalism suffering its worst \u201cblack eye\u201d in history with the \u00a0police rampage of violence and brutality against peaceful protestors and media representatives?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Najib realise for instance that the \u00a0Home Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, who had earlier said that Bersih 3.0 was \u201cno security threat\u201d as it had \u201cno traction\u201d and who was very fast in praising \u201cpolice restraint and professionalism\u201d despite the worst case of\u00a0 police rampage of violence and brutality, cannot inspire public confidence that there would be a no holds-barred public inquiry into the Bersih 3.0 violence and brutality regardless of the victims \u2013 whether the police, journalists or peaceful protestors?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan Najib pause, backtrack and salvage the situation before more damage is done to his administration and the country\u2019s international image from an even more disastrous mishandling of Bersih 3.0 \u201csit-in\u201d\u00a0 than the Bersih 2.0 rally last July?\u201d he asked. -The Rocket<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KUALA LUMPUR: The Bersih 3.0 \u201csit-in\u201d on April 28 was a greater public relations disaster for Datuk Seri Najib Razak than Bersih 2.0 \u2013 with the damage growing in magnitude and impact when all the horror stories of police\u2019s rampaging violence and brutality were told.
