{"id":36170,"date":"2013-01-21T04:36:03","date_gmt":"2013-01-20T20:36:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/?p=36170"},"modified":"2022-08-31T14:04:42","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T06:04:42","slug":"malaysia-among-worlds-top-3-countries-for-illicit-money-outflow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/malaysia-among-worlds-top-3-countries-for-illicit-money-outflow\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia among world&#8217;s top 3 countries for illicit money outflow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Malaysia-among.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3575\" style=\"padding-right: 20px;\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Malaysia-among-156x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"156\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>KUALA LUMPUR: The latest Global Financial Integrity Report on the RM196.8 billion illicit money siphoned out of Malaysia in 2010 shows that \u201csomething is rotten\u201d in Malaysia, said DAP Parliamentary Leader Lim Kit Siang.<\/p>\n<p>The GFI report showed that in the past ten years from 2001 to 2010, RM871 billion worth of illegal capital has been shipped out of the country, the third highest rank in the world over the decade.<\/p>\n<p>Lim said this \u201cmind-boggling\u201d figure was a \u201cwarning\u201d to Malaysians to change the federal government in the forthcoming 13th\u00a0General Elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe year 2012 ended very poorly both for the country and the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Edge reports that last year, Najib, who is also Finance Minister, gave Parliament a lower outflow figure of RM135.3 billion from 2000 to 2009. The GFI report, however, put Malaysia\u2019s illicit outflow at US$220.84 billion for the 2001-2009 period.<\/p>\n<p>Global financial watchdog GFI warned that capital flight in Malaysia is \u201cat a scale seen in few Asian countries\u201d. Neither Bank Negara nor the government has explained the results of this illegal outflow, which has persisted and worsened over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Lim described the country as being increasingly haunted by the ghosts of past decades of corrupt, undemocratic and unjust governance.<\/p>\n<p>He gave the example of the murder of auditor Jalil Ibrahim in Hong Kong in the first mega-scandal of the Mahathir era, the RM2.5 billion Bumiputra Malaysia Finance (BMF) scandal in the eighties.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Graf-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3576\" style=\"padding-right: 20px;\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/dapmalaysia.org\/en\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Graf-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a>Recently, former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir made the unforgettable quote that it is better for the people to elect the devil they know rather than the angel whom they may not know.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Mahathir had not reckoned with is that the ghosts of the past are increasingly taking centre-stage in Malaysian politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lim said this in reference to the \u201cghosts\u201d of murdered Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu; Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC)\u00a0victim Teoh Beng Hock\u00a0and the countless who had been \u201cmurdered\u201d while under police custody in police lockups like A.
