Media statement by Liew Chin Tong in George Town on Saturday, 12th February 2011:

Egyptian people's power - the Berlin Wall moment of the Muslim world

The Democratic Action Party (DAP) congratulates the people of Egypt who successfully forced the exit of President Hosni Mubarak yesterday after a 18-day mass protest which started on 25th January 2011.

On 11th February 2011 the world witnessed once again the triumph of democracy.

The end of Mubarak's thirty-year autocratic rule of Egypt, following the end of Ben Ali's 23-year rule of Tunisia, has ramifications beyond its shores.

All autocrats and dictators that survive on manipulating elections, controlling the media and crushing legitimate dissents with police brutality, are put on notice by the sudden wave of democratisation in the Middle East and North Africa.

It is also a clear signal to governments that have previously ignored the challenges posed by unplanned urban growth, youth unemployment and under-employment, growing inflation and inequality, as well as corruption.

The fall of Mubarak is the Berlin Wall moment of the Muslim World and together we can build a democratic world.
