An independent inquiry should be carried out on the shameful rape of a handball athlete in the Sukma 2013 in Universiti Putra Malaysia(UPM) to ensure female athletes are safe and that there will no repeat of such shameful incidents or else Penang may reconsider sending female athletes to future sukma games.

There have been complaints of lax security in the grounds of the female hostel despite assurances by the Ministry and SUKMA games organisers that security was adequate. Clearly security is lax until such a shameful sexual crime can happen. Such a crime has not only smeared the image of the SUKMA Games but also Malaysia’s international sporting reputation.

The Penang state government wants clear assurances from the Minister of Youth and Sport Datuk Khairy Jamaludin of adequate security and that action is taken against those responsible for such lax security in UPM. If Khairy fails to provide such assurances, then the Penang state government may reconsider sending female athletes to future SUKMA Games.
