DAP congratulates Halimah Yacob in being elected to Singapore’s highest office, as its first ever woman President. She has succeeded for Singapore where even the United States failed in electing a woman President.
Apart from breaking the glass ceiling for women, she is also a Malay and Muslim, a minority in Singapore. She also wears a tudung(hijab) without any restriction. This augurs well both for inclusion and diversity, granting equal opportunity for all regardless of race, religion, gender or background.
In congratulating Halimah Yacob, DAP hopes that this statement is not misconstrued by racists and religious extremists from certain political parties, that DAP is lobbying for non-Muslims to hold the highest office in Malaysia such as the Prime Minister. Nothing can be further from the truth.
No non-Malay or non-Muslim leader has ever sought the post of the Prime Minister. Instead DAP has always supported Malay Muslim leaders with a proven record of working together and treating minority ethnic groups and non-Muslims with respect and dignity. It is for this reason that DAP would refuse co-operation and fight racist and extremist political parties that would want to brand non-Muslims as second or third-class citizens, not deserving even of respect as a citizen of Malaysia.
