Malaysia Baru should be built on conversations and not confrontations

I refer to a Malaysiakini article ‘Does DAP need a friend like Perlis’ mufti?’ by S. Thayaparan.

The author and some others have questioned the need for DAP to engage with the Perlis Mufti, Dato’ Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, with regards to recent comments by him against the party.

These questions came into fruition from the desire to be confrontational, without making the effort to take the middle ground, to make peace and avoid prolonged animosity.

The DAP, as a party that rejects extremism and a party that promotes a peaceful Malaysia, where everybody regardless of race, religion and economic standing, can live together in prosperity; is always willing to make the effort to find the middle way, to dilute any form of animosity and hatred – that is sadly being propagated daily by certain quarters.

We are therefore willing to engage in dialogue, in view of correcting the incorrect perception towards the party, especially among Malay-Muslims who have been poisoned with falsehood against the party, that we are anti-Islam and anti-Malay.

Nearing the first anniversary of GE14, it is apt that we make it known and understood that New Malaysia is about breaking barriers and engaging in more dialogue.

Even if DAP does not endorse the views of those who oppose us, the least we can do is to peacefully engage them in dialogue, and understand one another for the sake of the greater good.

If each race, leaders and opinion makers are more interested in becoming their own hero, and start stamping the others as extremists, we will never be able to solve the problem, and it will further dampen nation-building efforts.

I call upon all quarters to come together and meet us in the middle, in conjunction with the blessed month of Ramadan, to join together in this grand effort to ensure that New Malaysia doesn’t go to waste, just because of our ego, at the expense of the future.
