A big relief for Kg Bohol should not be
turned into a nightmare for the people of Broga
Media Statement
by Ronnie Liu
(Petaling Jaya, Thursday):
In a news report in the
Malaysiakini today, the The Selangor State Exco member Moktar Dahalan was
quoted as saying that the Cabinet has decided to relocate the hazardous Kg
Bohol incinerator to Broga, Selangor. We have yet to receive the official
confirmation from Ong Ka Ting, the minister in-charge for the proposed
incinerator.
This comes as a big relief for the 1,000,000 people around Kg Bohol, but
the Minister of Housing and Local Government Ong Ka Ting must make sure
that the new site has to be absolutely remote and far away (at least 7.5km
in radius) from the people living in Broga and the surrounding areas. A big
relief for the residents of Kg Bohol should not be turned into a nightmare
for the people of Broga, Selangor.
It's the Minister's duty to enlighten the people of Broga on the relocation
of the world biggest incinerator to their backyard. As the State Chairman of
Selangor MCA, Ong must also explain and convince the people of Selangor that
the relocation of such incinerator will be absolutely safe, and certainly
would not pose a great threat to the health and wellbeing of the Selangor
people.
Broga is a beautiful village, about 13 km from Semenyih. About 500 Chinese
families are staying in the new village and the residential gardens nearby.
About 2,000 Malays live in the kampong, and a relatively small number of
Indians are living and working in the estates. It's the hometown of the late
Li Xian Nian, the former National Vice chairman of The People's Republic of
China.
DAP Selangor will continue to monitor the relocation plan closely in the
interest of the people. We would not hesitate to fight against the project,
as we have done for the proposed project in Kg Bohol, if we are convinced
that the safety and good health of the people are compromised.
