DAPSY urges the government to grant full
scholarships to all the 663 top scorers in SPM 2002 and send them to the
best universities around the world to get the best education to fully
develop their potentials
Statement
by Loke Siew Fook
(Petaling Jaya,
Thursday): DAPSY
congratulates all SPM high flyers who have scored excellent results in their
2002 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination which was announced yesterday.
According to the Education Ministry statistics, a total of 663 students
scored 1As in all subjects compared to 489 in 2001, while 2,732 scored a
combination of 1As and 2As in all their subjects as against 2,116 in the
previous year.
These results recorded a huge improvement in percentage points as the number
of students who scored all 1As increased by 35.6% while those scored a
combination 1As and 2As increased by 29.1%!
Although these results are highly commendable, the Examination Syndicate
must be reminded that paper qualifications are meaningless if the standards
and qualities of the examinations are low. The Examination Syndicate must
ensure that the standards of the examinations conducted by the syndicate
must always be maintained at a high level and students who sit through the
examinations are fully tested. High flyers of all examinations must be
competent and their ability to face challenges and competitiveness must be
on par with their results on paper.
The government has claimed that admission to all public universities this
year is fully based on meritocracy. It is in this spirit of meritocracy that
the DAPSY urges the government to grant full scholarships to all the 663 top
scorers in the 2002 SPM to further their studies locally or abroad. These
students are our best and brightest and the government must ensure that they
pursue the best education to fully develop their abilities and intelligences
so that they can contribute meaningfully to the country in the future.
As the top SPM scorer in 2001 Ong Jin Hock has been admitted to the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the world renowned institutions
of higher learning, the government must make all efforts to send all the top
scorers this year to all the best universities around the world to ensure
that they get the best education and bring back the best knowledge to the
country.
The government must also ensure that all other deserving students who scored
average results will also be given fair opportunities to pursue their
studies at a higher level. DAPSY will form a special monitoring group to
monitor and take actions when necessary if any injustices or hanky-panky in
the admission of SPM students to Form 6, matriculation courses and the
application of government scholarships as always happened in previous years.
