DAPSY leaders to participate in the IUSY Festival

(Kuala Lumpur, Tuesday): DAPSY leaders will be leaving for Greece this evening to participate in the IUSY Festival in Kammena Vourla, Greece from 23 to 29 July. The Festival is organized by the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) once every three years.

IUSY, of which DAPSY is a member organization, is made up of 135 socialist, social democratic and labor youth organizations from 100 countries all over the world. The IUSY festival is a wonderful opportunity for young political leaders from various parts of the globe to meet and exchange views on important issues such as peace, democracy, human rights, globalization and the environment.

This yearfs IUSY festival is hosted by PASOK Youth, the youth wing of the ruling party in Greece and is expected to attract at least 8,000 participants. The theme of the Festival is Action for Peace. Among the prominent figures who will grace the Festival are Costas Simitis (Prime Minister of Greece), Felipe Gonzalez (former Prime Minister of Spain) and Shimon Peres (former Prime Minister of Israel).

There DAPSY delegation to the IUSY Festival comprises DAPSY National Secretary Loke Siew Fook, Vice-Chairperson Chan Su Sann, National Assistant Secretary Leong Ooi Kuan, International Secretary John Chung, International Affairs Bureau Secretary Beh Jiun Jye, International Affairs Bureau Member Kwek Tek Chiang Vice chief Susann Chan, NEC members Jadryn Loo and Fong Po Kuan (also member of Parliament for Batu Gajah) and Medaline Chang.

In particular, DAPSY will highlight the various human rights abuses caused  by the draconian Internal Security Act and campaign for its abolishment. We will also attract attention to the current humanitarian crisis in Aceh and
urge other member organizations to put pressure on the Indonesian government to end its military offensive and return to the negotiation table for a peaceful resolution.
