The votes of the younger generation especially the “first-time voters” is very crucial and may play a decisive role in many constituencies especially those with thin majority such as Lukut in the coming general election

(Lukut, Tuesday) In the last general election on 29th November 1999, the then DAP candidate for the state constituency of Lukut, Sdr Lim Fui Meng lost to the Barisan Nasional incumbent who is also Negeri Sembilan State Executive Councilor (EXCO), Datuk Dr. Yeow Chai Thiam by a majority of 2,933 votes.

In the surface, Lukut constituency is a BN’s stronghold and it is a very uphill battle for the DAP to win this seat especially the incumbent is the key MCA Team B leader in Negeri Sembilan. But it is not impossible for the DAP to stage an upset in Lukut in the coming general election provided our branch leaders and members in Lukut will continue to work hard to convince the people of Lukut that the Rocket is their choice in the next poll.

The track record of the DAP is for all to see. Although Lukut is not represented by the DAP in the last three general elections, but it is the DAP who fought for the people relentlessly at the height of the Nipah virus in Bukit Pelanduk. DAP Secretary General, Kerk Kim Hock fought in and outside of Parliament to get fair compensations for the affected families who deserved it.

In the recent delineation exercise, the previous Lukut constituency has been broken up to two namely Chuah and Lukut. The Chuah constituency is consists of Tanah Merah, Kampung Pachitan, Bukit Pelandok, Sungai Nipah and Chuah while Lukut constituency includes Kampung Jimah Baru, Bandar Spring Hill, Taman Indah Jaya, Kuala Lukut and Pekan Lukut.

Based on the voting trend of the last general election, the DAP stand a good chance in the new Lukut constituency. The votes garnered by BN and DAP in the last general election in the various polling centers located in this new constituency was not a big difference. The votes garnered by both parties as of below:

Polling centers

Votes garnered by BN

Votes garnered by DAP

Bandar Spring Hill

631

Taman Indah Jaya

Kuala Lukut

Pekan Lukut

Kampung Jimah Baru was not within the Lukut constituency in last general election and without taking the 714 votes in Kampung Jimah Baru into consideration, the BN’s majority votes in Lukut has been slashed down from 2,933 votes to 563 votes.

In the coming general election, the votes of the younger generation especially the “first-time voters” is very crucial and may play a decisive role in many constituencies especially those with thin majority such as Lukut. Therefore, I call on all eligible voters, those who have reached 21 years old but have yet to register as a voter to immediately do so in major post offices.

Your vote is important to bring back healthy democracy in Negeri Sembilan and more importantly to break the total dominance of the Barisan Nasional in the Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly.

The DAP Pekan Lukut branch must also take up the challenge to create awareness among the young people in Lukut to register as a voter and mobile registration exercises should be organized in Lukut with the coordination of the Election Commission.
