Malaysian Women MPs joint statement on the recent increase of
incidences of crime
Joint Statement by Malaysian Women Members of Parliament (Parliament House, Thursday): We, female members of Parliament, wish to express our concern and fear at the increase in incidences of crime of late. The spade of abduction-rape-murder cases which occurred in the past several weeks, particularly that involving Canny Ong, had resulted in the public, especially women, fearing for their safety in public places such as parking lots, bus-stops, parks and quiet roads. The cases of crime that took place show that most victims of kidnap, rape, theft and snatch theft are women while cases involving break-ins, theft of possessions and murder also happened to men. This means that if the crime rate is not arrested, members of society will fall victim to crimes regardless of age, gender, race and political affiliation. We welcome the suggestion by government leaders requiring CCTV cameras and security guards installed at all car parks of building complexes. At the same time, we also wish to call on the Home Ministry to increase the number of police personnel and police patrol in residential areas, shopping complexes and other public places as soon as possible. This was in fact raised by members of Parliament in years past. In this connection, we commend the swift action taken by the police in the abduction-rape-murder case of Canny Ong. However, we feel that this case should not be closed just like that as the public still has many queries on the discrepancies that have surfaced in the case. As such, we call on the police to conduct a more thorough investigation into the case. Endorsed by,
