Death threat: DAP declares total support for Sdr Chow Kon YeowPress Statement by Kerk Kim Hock (Petaling Jaya, Sunday): The death threat with two bullets sent to DAP Tanjung MP, Chow Kon Yeow, is an unacceptable act of challenging the rule of law of the nation. I therefore call on the Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Norian Mai, to view this case with the utmost urgency and direct a thorough investigation into the death threat.
Though there have been previous occasions where elected representatives or political leaders, whether from the government or opposition parties, have received telephone threats for taking up issues which have affected the interest of individuals or groups, death threat with bullets sent to a MP is the first incident in the nation.
Any individual or group must realize that it is the duty and responsibility of an elected representative to speak up for the people. Hence, it is completely unacceptable that any individual or group which has been criticised or whose interest has been affected should resort to threat against the elected representative.
If any elected representative is not able to champion the people’s causes and effectively discharge their duties, what then is the meaning of our system of parliamentary democracy?
DAP elected representatives will not be deterred by such threats and the DAP declares its total support for Sdr Chow Kon Yeow who has vowed to continue discharging his duties as an elected representative without fear or favour.
