Reformasi 6 Countdown Day 4 - DAP CEC calls for immediate release
Press Statement
by Ronnie Liu
(Petaling Jaya,
Wednesday):
The DAP Central Executive Committee, at a
meeting held last night, has called for the immediate and unconditional
release of the Reformasi Six detained under the Internal Security Act as
there can be no reason or justification whatsoever to extend the two year
ISA detention of the six, whether national security, rule of law, good
governance or political morality. The detention order for the Reformasi Six
ends on Sunday,1 June 2003.
In fact, the six detainees, Tian Chua, Saari Sungib,
Hisahamuddin Rais, Mohammad Ezzam Mohd Nor, Lokman Noor Adam and Dr
Badrulamin should never have been locked away in Kamunting Detention Centre
in the first place.
The Federal Court had, last September, unanimously struck
down the legality of their initial ISA detention by police under Section 73
of the ISA as mala fide, which would have rendered the subsequent
Ministerial Order for their detention under Section 8 nugatory and
defective as well.
The DAP Central Executive Committee also calls for a full
parliamentary debate for the repeal of the draconian ISA, which is one of
the recommendations of the SUHAKAM Report on Review of ISA.
