Hari Raya Aidilfitri Message
by
Kerk Kim Hock

(Petaling Jaya, Monday): This year it will be even more so, because despite the tension, uncertainties and challenges faced by many societies, Malaysia has been spared the chaos gripping many parts of the world.

Malaysians of all religions live peacefully together largely because our forefathers played a very important role in laying the foundation for a climate of peace, tolerance and the respect of cultural, religious unity in diversity.

Indeed, peace and muhibbah which can promote mutual trust and unity must always prevail. Mutual understanding, tolerance and accommodation must also prevail to ensure peace and muhibbah.

We must not, therefore, let the hard work put in by our forefathers be threatened by any movement to alter the delicate configurations that keep the various races working together for the betterment of each other and the country.

We must always remember, respect, protect and preserve the “ social contract ” reached by the nation’s major races when achieving Independence –the Constitutional principle that Malaysia is a democratic, secular, multi religious and tolerant nation with Islam as the official religion but not an Islamic state.

We live in a society that is unique. This uniqueness is and must be the nation’s strength. And it is this uniqueness that will empower us to be competitive in the ever-shrinking global village.
