Call for Police Investigation on Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in connection with RM 18 billion Perwaja Scandal

(Ipoh, Saturday): In 1998, I proposed in the Dewan Rakyat, in my capacity as the Member of Parliament for Teluk Intan, that the Government issue a White Paper on the Perwaja Scandal. My proposal was rejected.

Five years later Parliament and the country have been told that Perwaja, managed by Maju Holdings since 1996, is still losing public money. In Parliament in early October 2003, the Deputy Finance Minister, in reply to a question by the DAP MP for Bagan, said that the losses for the following years were as follows:

1997 – RM 617.4 million
1998 – RM 465.3 million
1999 – RM 330.9 million
2000 – RM 300.6 million
2001 – RM 320.9 million

What will be the losses for 2002 and 2003?  According to the Deputy Finance Minister, all the losses from 1997 to 2001 will be borne by the Government until 2007.

In 1996, after a study by the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse, Perwaja was declared insolvent with accumulated losses of RM 3 billion.

Since its inception in 1982, the Government has spent at least RM 18 billion on Perwaja Steel, a gigantic waste of public money.

The Deputy Finance Minister, in his statement in Parliament in early October 2003 had also said: “Mengenai orang-orang yang bertanggungjawab dalam skandal PERWAJA, siasatan masih dijalankan.”

We call on the police to investigate Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad for his very close and deep involvement in the PERWAJA scandal. As Prime Minister of Malaysia Dr. Mahathir was very much involved with PERWAJA from the beginning in 1982.

It was Dr. Mahathir who appointed his close friend and crony Eric Chia as Managing Director of PERWAJA.

It was Dr. Mahathir, from various documents, who approved sums of more than half a billion for PERWAJA through Eric Chia, in utter violation of the cardinal principle of collective Cabinet consideration and decision on vast sums of public money.

As a Malaysian I hope the police will investigate the out-going prime minister without fear of favour, so that justice will be done for Malaysia and my fellow Malaysians.
