We propose that the Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu appoint a truly independent consultant to ascertain the genuine faults in the 1.7 flyover of the Middle Ring Road II in Kepong Media Statement by Dr Tan Seng Giaw (Kuala Lumpur, Wednesday): Yesterday, Datuk Seri Samy denied that the cracks in the 33 piers supporting the flyover were due to a design fault. The Kepong flyover has been built by a consortium that includes Bumihiway (M) Sdn Bhd which has appointed an Australian consultant to study the fault. The Government appointed a German consultant to do so. Apparently, the results of the studies by the two consultants contradict each other. The Middle Ring Road II is said to cost RM 238 million. The Kpong flyover was partially closed on 21 May, 2004, followed by total closure on 8 August, 2004.
The public are concerned with the faults and the closure of the flyover. The aggravated traffic congestion arouses anger. The Minister must appoint a truly independent consultant to ascertain the actual faults so that effective remedial work can be done.
