We urge the Works Minister to explain frankly how he arrives at the figure of RM20 million for the repair of the Kepong flyover of the Middle Ring Road II, not RM40 million or much higher

Media Statement

(Kuala Lumpur, Thursday): On 21 May, 2004, the Minister announced the partial closure of the flyover. Then since 8 inst, he has closed it down fully. He virtually monopolizes the media on the 1.7 Km flyover: no design flaw, 33 piers cracked, Australian and German consultants differ in their opinions and seeking a third expert’s view.

Datuk Seri Samy says:“I have told the Cabinet that the RM20 million repair bill is not easy an amount to be spent by the contractor.”

“I have instructed the Works Department (JKR) to open the segment of the flyover which allows road users from Batu Caves and Sungai Buloh to cross two sets of traffic lights of Jalan Kepong,” he added.

We need a truly independent consultant to study the project, ascertain the flaws and find a solution.

On what criteria did the Government award the RM238.8 million MRR2 project to the consortium of Sukmin Sdn Bhd, Bumihiway (M) Sdn Bhd and Konsortium Kontraktor Melayu?

Would the opening of a segment with two sets of traffic lights along Jalan kepong be enough to ease the traffic?

If the flyover has no design fault, why have all the 33 piers cracked? Should there be a construction flaw, why must it affect all the piers?

If the cost of the flyover is over RM100 million, on what ground has Samy based his RM20 million repair bill?

We hope the Minister answers the above-stated questions, so that he can dispel the public doubts.
