(Kuala Lumpur, Wednesday): DAPSY will be organizing a public debate on the Internal Security Act (ISA) with the theme “The Great Malaysian Debate: ISA, Yes or No?”

The debate will feature Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohd Nazri and Parliamentary Opposition Leader who is also the DAP National Chairman, Lim Kit Siang. The debate will be moderated by Tunku Abdul Aziz who is the President of Transparency International Malaysia.

In the last Parliamentary meeting, the issue of the ISA was raised. Nazri had issued a challenge to the DAP to debate the matter publicly. It was promptly accepted and later DAPSY took up the task of organizing the event.

We believe that this debate will present a rare opportunity for the public as well as civil society to air their views on the ISA, whether they agree or disagree with the legislation, in particular the concept of detention without trial. Such public debates would also serve as an important platform in helping to increase the space for public discourse on important issues which affect Malaysians at large.

The details of the debate are as follows:

Date: 12 July 2004 (Monday)
Time: 8.30 p.m.
Venue: Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Kuala Lumpur

The DAPSY organizing committee of the debate comprises the following members:

Organising Chairman: YB Loke Siew Fook (DAPSY National Secretary/ADUN for Lobak)
Committee Members: 1. Kuan Perk Siong (DAPSY Ass. National Secretary)
                                  2. Ooi Leng Han (DAPSY Publicity Secretary)
                                  3. John Chung (DAPSY International Secretary)
                                  4. Ean Yong Hian Wah (DAPSY NEC Member)

For inquiries, kindly contact Ms. Yong at 03-7957 8022.

We hope that members of the public, NGOs and other concerned parties will take the opportunity to attend this public debate on a very important national issue.
