Ramli Ngah Talib as Parliament Speaker? Absolutely No!

Press Statement
by Ngeh Koo Ham (
For and on behalf of Perak State DAP State Assembly Representatives)

(Ipoh,  Sunday): Perak DAP, and its 7 Assemblymen and Assemblywoman are absolutely surprised that Barisan Nasional under the leadership of Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is proposing Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib as the new speaker for pariliament.

Perak is still haunted by numerous scandals that occurred during Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib ‘reign’ of Perak as Menteri Besar. His commencement as the Menteri Besar of Perak also saw the start of the decline of Perak.

The Perak DAP and its elected representatives do not want to see another scandalous legacy after he becomes the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat.

Among the scandals that still haunt the Perak State  left by him are as follows:-

The Kampung Meru Tin- Jelapang Scandal

Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib approved a piece of land where there are 169 existing houses built thereon to a private developer! These are houses of former workers of Meru Tin Limited which has ceased operation. These houses have been issued Temporary Occupation Licenses yet he approved it to another, a private developer.

Pasir Salak Historical Complex

The state government has spent RM40 million in this project and is now almost abandoned.  Many believed it was built because of Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib’s self interest in the project. The manner in which the land was acquired was questioned by the Auditor General’s office.

Kampung Tersusun Jelapang Tambahan

Alienating the land where 126 families are residing to a private developer. These families were resettled in the area by the Government in 1971 when they had to move from Jalan Diary and Jalan Silibin in Ipoh. Instead of issuing separate individual titles to these residents, Tan Sri Ramli deems it fit to alienate it to a private developer.

Land in Pusing

Many families in Pusing now face eviction though they have been staying there for more than 70 years. Temporary Occupation License (TOL) were issued to them even before the present Perak State Government comes into existence. It was during Ramli Ngah Talib’s tenure that these lands were approved to private developers at the expenses of existing residents.

There are many more scandalous examples under the reign of Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib in Perak. We urged Dato’ Seri Abdullah Badawi to reconsider his choice of the Dewan Rakyat Speaker so as to avoid the repeat of the scandalous legacy happening to the Dewan Rakyat.
