We call on the Ministry of Housing and Local Government to take immediate action to ensure that the developer, Kansas, hand over the  houses in specified time to the buyers. This is not only confined to Prima Selayang, but also many housing projects in the country

(Kuala Lumpur,  Sunday): Prima Selayang, near the Selayang Hospital, is developed by Kansas Corporation Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Jurubena Tenaga. There are 109 shoplots, each costing about RM900,000. The developer signed a sale and purchase agreement with the purchasers on 21 December, 1996, promising to deliver the shoplots on 19 May, 2000.

The purchasers have pestered Kansas to no avail. Since 14.11.2001, they have sought help from many sources, including the Selangor State Government this month.

The developer has obtained installments from purchasers amounting to nearly RM100 million. Where are the four storey shop offices?

Which ministry is responsible for supervising developers? The Housing Ministry should take immediate action to ascertain the cause or causes of the stall in the project. We don¡¯t understand why the ministry or whatever relevant authority such as the Selayang Municipality has not helped the buyers in the last four years.

At a time when the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has advocated action against developers and contractors who have failed, we expect all government departments to heed the call. Whether in the public or private sector, we would like to see accountability. The hue and cry about at least six projects such as the Kepong Viaduct and the Matrade Headquarters have made the Prime Minister unhappy. He has directed the Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu to take action against the errant contractors. Similarly, the Government should haul up the developer for Prima Selayang.
