(Petaling Jaya, Friday): The least  the Works Minister, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu should do is to publicly apologise for his earlier baseless conviction  that the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) flyover  cracks are not caused by design flaw, even threatening law suits against those who made any such suggestion.

In a country with “First World Infrastructure, First World Mentality”, there would now be a new Works Minister after the folly of Samy Vellu, dismissing all notion of design flaw as the cause of the MRR2 flyover cracks and threatening law suits against those who made any such suggestion.

However,  as Malaysia is still a long way from achieving the aspiration of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to attain the “First World Infrastructure, First World Mentality” status, nobody is expecting any Ministerial resignation. However, is Samy Vellu prepared to eat humble pie and  publicly apologise for his blunder and explain why he was so convinced two months ago that the MRR2 cracks could not have been caused by design flaws, as is now the verdict of the British consultant, Halcrow Group Ltd?

The government has oft boasted that Malaysia has acquired the expertise and technological capability to undertake massive infrastructure projects themselves, as the nation has some 44,000 engineers in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering as well as 3,000 architects and 2,000 quantity surveyors.

Why then had there been no one single Malaysian firm involved in the three consultants who had been appointed in connection with the MRR2 flyover cracks – as all the three consultant firms involved  have been foreign ones, Australian, German and the latest British?

Samy Vellu should release to the  public in full all the three consultant reports on the MRR2 cracks, the Australian consultant report engaged by  design engineer Mounsell, Sharma and Zakaria,  the German consultant report by Kohler and Seit engaged by the contractor Bumi Hiway and the British consultant report by Halcrow appointed by the Public Works Department in line with the principles of accountability, transparency, open  and good governance.
