(Putrajaya, Thursday): As I said in Parliament yesterday, whether former Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim can walk out of the Federal Court at  the Palace of Justice, Putrajaya today will be a watershed in the long and agonizing struggle to restore national and international confidence in a truly independent judiciary and a just rule of law in Malaysia.

The majority Federal Court decision today, acquitting Anwar of the sodomy charge, is an important turning point for the system of justice in Malaysia, dispelling the black clouds which have enveloped the judiciary for more than one-and-a-half decades.

It is not only good for Anwar and his family, who had suffered for six years, but for the country in sending out a clear signal that Malaysia is again trying to become a normal country where there is full respect for the rule of law which does not countenance any form of abuse of power  and where the separation of powers of the three branches of government are honoured.

Anwar’s freedom also sends out a strong message to all Malaysians to stand firm in their commitment and struggle for justice, freedom, democracy and good governance  and not to give way to despair, however hard, arduous and impossible the odds and obstacles standing in their  way – as finally, truth and justice must prevail.
