(Parliament, Friday): Legislators, political leaders and NGO representatives at the inaugural Parliamentary Opposition Leader’s Roundtable Conference on the Police Royal Commission Report with the theme “Police Reforms – Who Guard the Guardians?” has called for the full implementation of the 125 recommendations of Police Royal Commission to create an efficient, people-friendly, corruption-free police service which serves the people and not just the state

The Roundtable Conference was attended by DAP MP for Kepong Dr. Tan Seng Giaw and DAP MP for Seputeh, Teresa Kok, DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng, Parti Keadilan Rakyat Information Chief Tian Chua, HAKAM Vice President Malik Imtiaz, Women’s Development Collective representatives ; Maria Chin Abdullah (executive director) and Ho Yock Lin, Malaysian Trade Unions Congress representative  K. Somasundram, Amnesty International Malaysia representative Joseph Roy Benedict, PRIM President, P. Uthayakumar, Police Watch Chairman R.N. Rajah and SUARAM Co-ordinator Chan Li Kang.

The Roundtable Conference was greatly concerned about increasing signs of  lack of government commitment to fully implement the Royal Commission’s 125 recommendations despite the pledge of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to fully support the Commission’s  police reforms proposals.

The Roundtable Conference reached a consensus on the following five points:

  • Create a world-class 21st-century police force with zero tolerance for corruption to keep crime rate low and respect human rights, especially the rights of women and children.

  • Full and immediate implementation of the 125 recommendations of the Police Royal Commission in accordance with its  time schedule.

  • Establish the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) in the June meeting of Parliament.

  • Intensive debate by Parliament and the civil society on the 600-page Police Royal Commission Report and its 125 recommendations.

  • A Parliamentary Select Committee on Police to exercise oversight and ensure accountability of  the 100,000-strong Royal Malaysian Police Force, the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission and the implementation of the 125 recommendations of the Police Royal Commission.
