Media Statement

(Petaling Jaya Wednesday): Academic Dr Lim Teck Ghee’s shock resignation from think-tank Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli) today has undermined the basis of Asli president Mirzan Mahathir’s decision to retract a study carried out by Lim. The study, which said the bumiputera corporate equity ownership was around 45 percent, instead of the government's figure of 18.9 percent, had attracted severe criticism from Umno Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Mirzan’s father, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Yesterday, Mirzan had retracted the study's methodology because he claimed it contained a number of shortcomings and was flawed. He even apologized for the inaccurate report that bumis controlled 45% of the corporate equity. Mirzan’s actions are not surprising as his own father had launched a ferocious assault on this report’s findings.

By resigning and standing by the findings of the study, Dr Lim has shown his courage in taking full responsibility for his research findings. Unlike Mirzan who made his statement not based on any research findings, Dr Lim has shown himself to be unique as an outstanding academic with upstanding integrity. Never before as an academic resigned from his job to uphold the truth of his research findings and such rare sacrifice has raised doubts about the reliability of government statistics.
