Former Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Mohd Ali Rustam should resign his senatorship

Former Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Mohd Ali Rustam has used race card in the run up to the just concluded Umno Vice Presidency elections. His campaign issues have even made some people wonder if he was then contesting for the president’s post in the PERKASA election as he was speaking like the hate politician Datuk Ibrahim Ali.

But he was badly defeated in the Umno election and could only garner 7 votes. What was more insulting to him was that he only obtained 1 vote from Melaka that is from his own Bukit Katil division.

When Mohd Ali lost in the Bukit Katil parliamentary seat in the May 5 general election, he has attributed his defeat to people not appreciating the good deeds he has done for them over the past 13 years.

He blamed the Chinese for their ingratitude even though he lost by a huge 5,447-majority to PKR candidate Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin. Bukit Katil is a Malay majority seat as it has 99,438 voters, of which 53 percent are Malays followed by Chinese (41 percent) and Indians (6 percent).

In the run up to the Umno election, Mohd Ali who is PUNB chairman ( Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad) claimed that the Chinese community were able to do better in business because they can dabble in "illegal businesses" such as gambling industry, number betting industry, lottery industry, massage parlour industry and illegal money lending.

He added that PUNB's job was to ensure that the whole chain of a businesses - from suppliers to retailing - were all done by Malays.

Now that he has been dealt such a humiliating defeat, who shall he blame? Ungrateful Umno members?

In early October, when tabling a motion in the Melaka State Assembly to appoint Mohd Ali senator, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron said Ali left an indelible mark as Chief Minister in Malacca's economy, social well-being, infrastructure development, environmental protection, administration and cultural sustainability.

But in the Umno election held two days ago, Ali even failed to win the support of Tangga Batu division headed by Idris Haron.

Since Bukit Katil voters and Umno Melaka members have decisively rejected Mohd Ali, he should do the honourable thing by resigning his senatorship.
