Dear Friends I would like to wish everyone here who have come to sign the citizen’s declaration a very good morning. I have together today the local Assemblyman for this area Bercham Sdr. Cheong Chee Khing and DAP branch leaders and members.
Today the DAP has embarked on a citizens declaration campaign together with former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir and internal dissidents in Umno based on broadprinciples and objectives of common good and not personalities. We can’t dwell in the past but rather stick to the present and do what is necessary for change.
The country today is a dire need for a change of Government based on various issues of governance, from1 MDB corruption that continues to harm the economy, selective prosecution of opposition’s personalities, theattempt to table the Hudud Law, and rising prices of goods and service due to GST. Malaysia is today is also regarded as one of the 10 most corrupt country in the world. The resignation of Najib would not be enough, but it would be catalyse for the down fall of his cronies and unethical ministers who are aligned to him.
The DAP being a partner of Pakatan Harapan will not be able to bring about a change unless strong and dominant party like Umno is defeated in the General Election. This is possible if those who oppose Najib in UMNO join hands with us. We need a common platform for common goal to bring about changes by reaching to out to many citizens as possible including those from the Barisan National. The citizen declaration is based on a broader appeal to all people of good will who want change.
Contrary to some who have stated that citizen’sdeclaration is merely a Dr Mahathir’s agenda since it is focus on Najib link to MDB, the declaration also emphasize on system change. For example it addresses the importance of removing leaders who are aligned toNajib to restore the integrity of institutions such as the MACC ,Bank Negara,PAC,and also laws the deprives Malaysians of fundamental rights. I would like to readsome of those in the declaration.
a) The removal of Najib as PM of Malaysia through non-violent and legally permissible means.
b) The removal of all those who have acted in concert with him.
c) A repeal of all recent laws and agreements that violate the fundamental rights guaranteed by the federal constitution and undermine policy choices.
d) A restoration of the integrity of the institutions that have been undermined, such as the police, the MACC, Bank Negara and the PAC.
We call upon all Malaysians, irrespective of race, religion, political affiliation, creed or parties, young and old to join us in saving Malaysia from the government headed by Najib, to pave the way for much-needed democratic and institutional reforms, and to restore the important principle of the separation of powers among the executive, legislature and judiciarywhich will ensure the independence, credibility, professionalism and integrity of our national institutions.
Currently there are 1.27 million signatures on the citizens declaration. We would like to have more of these signatures to present the will of Malaysians to the Yang dipertuan Agong. I wouldlike to invite all concern Malaysians to sign on this declaration to bring about the resignation ofNajib Tun Razak and the cronies aligned to him. This would bring about a system change in this country.
