Penang Green Carnival is coming back this 23 & 24 July (Sat & Sun) at Sunway Carnival Convention Centre, 10am-6pm by Penang Green Council (PGC). It will be a weekend of inspiring education and exciting games through innovative ideas, technologies and practices for families and businesses while embarking the necessary changes and green practices.
In line with the State Government’s implementation of Waste Segregation At Source Policy, the theme this year – Penang My Green Home will attempt to answer this question with the motivation on developing, designing, and maintaining a green home and lifestyle. Remember we can only be an international and intelligent city when Penang is a green state.
In Penang, a total of 656,090 tonnes of waste were generated in 2014 and an average of 1,700 – 1,800 Tonnes of waste are sent to Pulau Burung landfill every day. The estimated landfill life span is 42 years if it is equipped with the Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) and could last for 60 years if food waste converter is equipped as well. Waste segregation at source is one of the ways to sustain the environment and to reduce waste generation to the Pulau Burung landfill.
PENANG GREEN CARNIVAL’s FIRST ECO-MOVIE SCREENINGS
We proudly present our first ever eco-movie screenings in collaboration with EcoKnights, which is based in Kuala Lumpur this carnival.
Ecoknights will be presenting two movies and various short films on current environmental issues for the viewing pleasure of the audience during the two-day event. Screenings are FREE and perfect for all ages; free snacks will be given out during screenings too!
SPECIAL TALK BY PM.HAZE SINGAPORE AND MINI SUNDAE TALK
Acrid smoke billowing from agricultural fires in Indonesia has caused a spike in air pollution in Malaysia last September. The fires can threaten human health, endangered species and the global climate. To address the issue, our special guest – Chris Cheng Chin Hsien from PM.Haze (People’s Movement to Stop Haze) Singapore will share his experience in combating haze pollution.
Penang Institute, the public policy think tank of Penang state government is hosting the Mini Sundae Talk based on three of the thematic routes we are leading this year: outdoor air quality, indoor air quality, energy saving and water demand management. The informative and interactive sessions will enlighten and lead us to start one, small step at a time.
MORE THAN 40 EXHIBITORS AND ACTIVITY PARTNERS SUPPORT WASTE WISE AGREEMENT
The Waste Wise Agreement, initiated by Melbourne Sustainable Living Festival (SLF), intends to minimise waste generation and maximise recycling practice in line with the recent Waste Segregation at Source implementation. The agreement outlines waste separation at the event, encourages the usage of sustainable materials and to not provide free plastic bags during the event just like Penang.
