DAPSY strongly condemns the blocking of Steam game store by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). More than just a case of restricting users’ access, this act exhibits how MCMC’s unchecked powers can be easily abused if there are no limitations imposed on them.
Clearly, the Barisan Nasional Federal Government as well as its apparatus do not understand the fundamental rights of its citizens. Instead of adhereing to the Prime Minister’s declaration that the era of government knows best is finally over, what MCMC did today gravely foreshadows an era where a big brother government is the norm of day – each of the citizens movement, thought and speech is heavily monitored and controlled.
Malaysia, under the Barisan Nasional federal government, seems to be heading towards a future where there will be unnecessary censorships imposed on the convenience of the government rather than allowing the youth to exercise their own judgement. This also shows that the Barisan Nasional government doesn’t trust the intelligence of Malaysian youth and still believes the ‘government knows best’ without considering what the people really want.
The Barisan Nasional Youth headed by Khairy Jamaluddin doesn’t seem to get the drift of the youth of today despite their attempts to win over the youth with their TN50 engagements.
DAPSY demands Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak to give explanation to such act by MCMC and further, reverse the DNS blocking of Steam Store respect the rights and intelligence of Malaysians especially the youth.
This incident demonstrates the too often repeated adage – although you might not take an interest in politics, but politics take an interest in you. Hence, DAPSY urges youth to act now. To those who who are eligible to vote, register as a voter and exercise your right to make a difference.
