Chew Mei Fun should prove her commitment to concept of two party system

It is obvious that BN candidate for Kajang by election, Chew Mei Fun is suffering from political amnesia.

Yesterday, she said that her victory would create a healthier two party system in the Selangor Assembly.

“I appeal for the support of Kajang voters so that I may be elected as the Kajang state assemblyperson to further strengthen the state’s opposition and our role as a check and balance against the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat government,” she said in her statement.

It is good that she has talked about the vision of a two party system which the Pakatan Rakyat has been fighting for. But is she really committed to the vision or is she just talking about it simply because she needs a slogan for the by election?

In the many previous elections prior to 2008, MCA has always campaigned against the DAP by telling the voters that an opposition can only talk but cannot do anything. MCA has also said that it is easier to get things done if you are in the government (有人在朝好做事).

Some MCA leaders have even said that the Opposition is unable to deliver just like the cock which can crow but cannot lay eggs.

BN leaders have in the past also asked the voters not to support a stronger DAP by playing the line that two or three DAP MPs like Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh were more than enough to play the opposition role in Parliament.

So why is Chew now talking about strengthening the opposition in the Selangor State Assembly and the vision of a two party system?

Why has she suffered attack of political amnesia when she has been nominated as a candidate for the upcoming by election?

I wish to ask Chew Mei Fun is she is aware of what Umno Vice President and Home Minister Datuk Zahid Hamidi has said about two party system a few days ago during his visit to Australia.

This is part of a report of JOM magazine dated Feb 19. (JOM is Malaysian community magazine in Australia)

“Not attracted” to Two-Party System

During an interview with SBS and JOM, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that he is not attracted to the idea of establishing a two-party system in Malaysian politics.

“Although democracy has been translated into the real democratic system, the ultimate aim for them (opposition) is to establish a dual system in Malaysia,” said the minister, after recalling the losses of BN to the opposition in certain areas.

“The political goal in America or even in UK are not certainly suitable to be translated into our political system. Malaysia as a whole are happy with the democratic system at the moment. Although the other party is trying to get their supporters to agree on forming two-party system, but I reckon the general public, especially the silent majority, are satisfied with the existing system.”

If Chew Mei Fun is committed to the concept of two party system, she has to prove it by firstly admitting MCA’s mistake in its past anti two party system campaign tactics and secondly repudiating Zahid’s anti democracy stand.
