DAP extends our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Anthony Kevin Morais on his untimely and tragic passing. What happened to him is inhumane. We thank and shall always remember Morais for his dedicated service for the nation as a Deputy Public Prosecutor
I was deeply moved by the statement of Attorney-General’s Chambers last night, who wanted “police to investigate thoroughly to enable the perpetrators to be identified, found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law”.[1]
I cannot agree with AGC more. The culprits need to be brought to book as soon as possible. We cannot allow such horrendous murder to dampen the spirit of the enforcement officers. The safety of law officers should be upheld at the highest level, as their efficiency to work without fear and favour is the key of justice delivery.
At the same time, the same standard of investigation should apply in Teoh Beng Hock case. In fact, it should apply in all cases.
In September last year, the Court of Appeal has set aside the open verdict by a coroner on the death of Teoh Beng Hock, ruling that “the death of Teoh Beng Hock was caused by multiple injuries from a fall from the 14th floor of Plaza Mazalam, a result of which was accelerated by an unlawful act or acts of person unknown, inclusive of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers involved in the arrest and investigation of the deceased.”
A year has passed. None of the MACC officers have been identified, found and prosecuted for the death of Teoh Beng Hock. The inaction of the police and AGC has rendered the judgment meaningless, thus making a mockery of justice.
We demand justice for Mr. Anthony Kevin Morais. We demand justice for Teoh Beng Hock and Altantuya. Until and unless the perpetrators are brought to justice, we cannot hold our heads up high and say the rule of law in our country is not undermined.
