It was reported several days ago that a special aide to a DAP Penang assemblyperson was under investigation for being involved in a sex-crime. It was reported that he was investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code for Assault or use of criminal force to a person with intent to outrage modesty. The victim is reported to be 21 years of age.
From a Malaysiakini report today, it is understood that the aide will be charged in the Penang Magistrates Court tomorrow.
DAP Wanita states unequivocally that it condemns any form of sexual attacks on women, irrespective of who the suspect may be.
It is never easy for a victim of sexual violence/assault to speak up and report such matters. In fact, it is often because their versions are not taken seriously or due to the lack of proof, many chose to remain silent. The stigma that is often attached to such victims also hinder many from speaking up. The trauma of such an experience cannot be taken lightly and victims must be given full support.
We laud the authorities in having dealt with the matter professionally and expeditiously. We also commend the victim in this case for having reported the case and hope that this will be an example to others to speak up.
No doubt, the suspect is fully entitled to defend himself in the legal proceedings ahead. We hope the law will take its course and a just decision will be reached.
