It is shocking for YB Dato Seri Azalina binti Othman Said to make a call at the UMNO special briefing for Prime Minister to appoint an Attorney General from amongst their own (meaning bias towards UMNO). In the context she made the call, she is saying the PM should appoint an AG who will act according to the PM’s dictates including abusing the power of the AG acting as Public Prosecutor to withdraw charges against the corrupt and those who abused power especially the Umno leaders. This is totally against the rule of law ! This is the very reason why the call to have the role of the Public Presecutor be separated from that of the Attorney General ( as top legal adviser to the government). The potential abuse by the Executive led by the PM is real. The Public Prosecutor should be made answerable to Parliament rather than to the PM. Even after the roles of the AG are separated from that of the Public Prosecutor , the AG should still be expected as top legal officer to the Government advise the Government to uphold the rule of law rather than going against it.
Azalina binti Othman Said as special adviser to the Prime Minister for Law and Human Rights has proven to be unfit to advise the PM on governing the nation based on rule of law. She should resign from her post immediately.
