DBKL urged to review the sale of 6.17 acres of land to Mah Sing Group Berhad for the construction of a high-density project on the Former Water Theme Park Land in Taman Desa

I am deeply disappointed by DBKL’s decision to sell 6.17 acres of land in Taman Desa to Mah Sing Group Berhad for the development of high-density housing with a plot ratio of 1:9.

Once again, as the Member of Parliament for Seputeh, I was neither informed nor consulted by the government regarding the approval of the land sale and development project, which had been planned much earlier before I was made aware of it, only after Mah Sing Group Berhad announced it in the media last week.

According to news reports, Mah Sing Group Berhad has successfully acquired land in Taman Desa. The company plans to develop the land in two phases: the first phase will consist of building 1,612 units of serviced apartments under the name M Aspira on 3.7 acres, and the second phase will involve constructing 800 units of affordable homes under the name Residensi Madani on 2.47 acres. The total development value is RM1.01 billion.

The land sold by DBKL to Mah Sing Group was previously reclaimed from the developer Aset Kayamas by the government during Khalid Samad’s tenure as Minister of Federal Territories (July 2018 – February 2020). Former Minister Khalid Samad took this action following complaints of “excessive development” from residents of Taman Desa.

At that time, the government intended to turn the open space into a recreational park for the residents of Taman Desa, but this plan has now been canceled and replaced with rapid development in the area.

The current government’s actions are nonsensical, as the land has been sold twice by DBKL, and the canceled development plan has been revived with the land awarded to another developer.

Considering that DBKL has utilized Method 7 under the Development Plan Rules (1970) by inviting landowners around the proposed site to present their views and send them to the Director of the Kuala Lumpur City Planning Department, I urge residents in the vicinity of the proposed project site in Taman Desa to submit their objections via email to DBKL at [email protected] before 21 July 2024.
