This is the first time that Parliament was dissolved just before welcoming the celebrations of the principal festival of a major community like Deepavali. The Indian community, like many marginalised Malaysians should make their voices heard in the coming general election.
For instance, the 2022 Budget allocated only RM345 million to the Chinese and Indian community whilst giving RM 11.7 billion to the bumi and orang asli community. No one opposes the RM 11.7 billion given but why give only RM345 million to the Indian and Chinese community, which is less than 3% of that given to the bumi and orang asli community.
The current high cost of living, the expected hikes in interest rates, the severe labour shortages, the depreciating ringgit dropping to historic lows against the US and Singapore dollar, have blighted the livelihood of the people and business community, especially SMEs. If we continue the existing failed policies or bury our heads in the sand like an ostrich out of sheer ignorance, then our economic problems will only intensify.
Malaysians should reject those who aspire to be a wakil rakyat for only one community and seeks to deny or disrespects the fundamental rights and lifestyle of minorities. Let us work together with fellow Malaysians who are inclusive, promote economic prosperity and equity, value racial diversity and religious harmony, respect the Federal Constitution and fellow Malaysians, as well as advocate social justice, rule of law and basic human rights.
As a Festival of Light, Malaysians share the responsibility to bring light to the nation. HAPPY DEEPAVALI to all Malaysians.
