Experiencing firsthand the BAS.MY Kuching stage bus

Today, I had the opportunity to experience firsthand the BAS.MY Kuching stage bus service under the Federal Government’s initiative, and I must say, this is a huge step forward in improving public transportation for the people of Kuching.

The implementation of the Stage Bus Services Transformation (SBST) in Kuching is one of the main issues I raised in Parliament as early as 2018 to ensure quick and proper implementation for the benefit of the people of Kuching. Initially, the project was supposed to be implemented in 2019, but there was a delay due to the disagreement on the specifications of the buses by the State Government.

I continued to push for the project even through multiple changes of government, and I am glad that it is finally agreed upon and implemented by the current Unity Government. This initiative will help our people transition to public transportation, addressing the growing traffic congestion in Kuching.

The bright pink BAS.MY buses are easy to spot, and many commuters are already benefiting from this service. With modern, fully equipped city buses, this initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to providing accessible, affordable, and efficient transport for all. Each bus is equipped with GPS, electronic ticketing machines, and OKU-friendly features, ensuring a comfortable and inclusive travel experience.

To make public transport even more cost-effective, the Federal Government has introduced the My50 travel pass, which offers unlimited rides for just RM50 per month. Additionally, concession cards are available for senior citizens, OKU users, and students. Those eligible can register with their NRIC (and OKU card if applicable), while students will need a confirmation letter from their institution. Registration can be done at Biaramas Express Sdn Bhd’s office at 9 Market Street (above 7-Eleven) or at the temporary booth near the Open Air Market.

I am also pleased to share that the registration fee for the concession card is only RM10, with a validity period of two years for senior citizens and students, and five years for OKU users. More importantly, renewals will be free, as the Federal Government has committed to covering the cost for concession card users. This is yet another initiative that ensures affordable and accessible transport for those who need it most. As of now, 232 residents have applied for the concession card and I am happy to see such a positive response to this new service.

This project is a clear demonstration of an effective and inclusive initiative by the Federal Government, leading to real improvements in people’s lives. I encourage more Kuchingites to take advantage of this service, as embracing public transport will reduce traffic congestion and help build a more connected, sustainable, and people-friendly city.

I commend the Federal Government for its investment in transforming Sarawak’s public transport and look forward to seeing further enhancements and better collaboration with the State Government to make public transport the preferred choice for all.
