Gerakan’s sexism confirms they are irrelevant to Malaysian politics

I refer to Gerakan legal and human rights bureau chief, Baljit Singh’s statement on Gerakan’s formula to win the next election. (Source: https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/358435)

At the recent party’s annual general assembly, he said that for Gerakan, “winnable candidate equals multiracial, women and young.”

As if UMNO-Barisan Nasional’s racism is not bad enough, Gerakan is now stooping to a new low, resorting to sexism, degrading female politicians’ worth as merely being “beautiful, sweet, energetic, sexy and willing to give it her all.”

Thus true to his misogynistic eyesight, he saw DAP candidate for Teluk Intan Saudari Dyana Sofya as “a young Malay girl” and nothing else.

DAP versus Gerakan’s view on female politicians

I am sorry to disappoint Baljit Singh.

To DAP, Dyana Sofia in the Teluk Intan by-election, to quote Saudara Lim Kit Siang, “is a battle between the future and the past, the new versus the old politics of Malaysian nationalism against the politics of race”, not merely “a young Malay girl” and nothing else. Looking back, it is little wonder that during the 2014 Teluk Intan by-election when Saudari Dyana Sofya contested against Gerakan President Mah Siew Keong, she was attacked with despicable sexist tactics including spreading false photos of her in bikinis.

Gerakan on its way out of Malaysian politics

Gerakan continually demonstrates that the party is no longer relevant to Malaysian politics. The party no longer understands the aspirations of Malaysians for our country.

When Malaysians are demanding for a clean government, Gerakan continues to be in cohort with Prime Minister Najib Razak whose corruption scandal is now subject of global-scale investigations.

When Malaysians are fighting racism, Gerakan continues to endorse UMNO’s racism which recently manifested in the violent red shirt UMNO members attacking Bersih participants threatening May 13 on the country.

When Malaysians are demanding for justice including gender equality, Gerakan sees women’s worth in politics only in them being “young beautiful and sexy”.

Finally, I urge Gerakan to apologise to all Malaysians for their misogynist view on women or face the wrath of total rejection in the next election.
