Hudud: PAS must respect the Pakatan agenda and not threaten us

DAP and PKR have every right to oppose PAS’s plan to introduce hudud in Kelantan as PAS is a partner in Pakatan Rakyat.

PAS rode on the combined strength of Pakatan Rakyat in the last elections and we in DAP and PKR formed an alliance with them after they accepted our common agenda which did not include hudud. Malaysians threw their support behind Pakatan Rakyat on the strength of this very common agenda which must now be given full force and effect.

It is our duty to now firmly remind PAS of this and how it is many voted for them on the basis of the Pakatan common agenda. PAS cannot and must not now resile from the Pakatan Rakyat agenda which it officially accepted in 2011.

PAS is wrong to say that the consensus of the opposition coalition not to implement hudud was only with regard to the national context. That is a weak excuse to avoid the truth which is the fact that all along hudud was never part of the Pakatan agenda announced in 2011 which applies across the board.

The DAP will not be cowed by threats. We will continue to do what is right and speak up against hudud as it is clearly unconstitutional and against the Pakatan Rakyat agenda.

If PAS insists on tabling this bill to implement hudud in Kelantan, then it can expect full, firm and open resistance from us in the DAP. This has always been and always will be our official stand.
